FAQ
Why does one character become two \u escapes?
Characters outside the Basic Multilingual Plane (emoji, rare CJK ideographs) are represented as surrogate pairs in \uXXXX form — two 4-digit escapes that combine into one character. The "non-ASCII only" mode also emits them as single \u{...} code point escapes when appropriate.
